Oingo Boingo

I was over reading Electric Venom and Kate had a bit of interesting trivia that I did not know: Oingo Boingo was on The Gong Show!

I was a huge fan of the group in the '80s. I mean, c'mon, I'm a child of the '80s. I danced in the .32 bars to "Goodbye, Goodbye" and "Dead Man's Party." Who didn't love "Weird Science?" I'm also a big fan of Danny Elfman's compositional style. I love the soundtracks he did for Beetlejuice, Batman Returns, not to mention "The Simpsons Theme" from the TV show.

It was their late '70s incarnation, known as The Mystic Knights of the Oingo Boingo, that appeared on the show. Check out the footage from The Gong Show in the extended. You certainly can't mistake that it is Danny Elfman with that flaming red hair.

My Spidey Sense

Heh, now I know why I didn't want to go to work yesterday. My intuition must have been warning me that the chick I am having issues with decided to show for a couple of hours. Yeah, she's the last person I want to see on a day I volunteer to do extra work. I had a relatively peaceful 6 hour shift today, though. A lot of my filing in the Archive Room is now caught up.

Depending on how this week goes, I'm going to try to take the whole weekend off next weekend. I have much to do and would really like to have two whole days away from work. Of course, if I don't put any OT in during the week and the weekend is the only time I can get some extra hours, I'll probably take them.

I stopped by the Great American Quilt Factory and found my final piece of fabric I need. w00t! Now I just need to clean up the mess I've made recently in my craft room and get quilting!

When is enough enough? I saw an ad in a magazine today for the new Alvin and the Chipmunks movie. Um, how about Hollywood get off their collective asses and come up with an original move idea. I'm so sick of old stuff being regurgitated. Seriously.

I watched a movie called Surf's Up last night. It was ok, but definitely not one of the better animated movies I've ever seen. I know they were trying to do it in a documentary style, but it was a bad documentary style. I wasn't impressed.

The Big Bang Theory

I haven't been thrilled with much that's on television this season and therefore not terribly saddened by the Hollywood writer's strike, but one show I absolutely love is The Big Bang Theory. Maybe it is the soft spot I have in my heart for geeks or because I am one, but I absolutely love this show!

I first thought the premise was stupid. I only watched it because it was sandwiched in between two other Monday night shows I regularly watch. Here's the premise: Two genius-type guys share an apartment and their world is turned topsy turvy when a pretty blond moves in a across the hall. Stereotypes abound, but I can totally believe the storylines. I've read several reviews of people absolutely hating this show. Maybe it's because they don't know any of these types of people in real life. All I know is, it's one of two shows that I look forward to every week, the other being The Ghost Whisperer.

I'm sure this show will not survive more than a season since I like it so much, though. Seems to be my luck.

I Hate NBC

I think I'm going to join Marcus in his boycott of NBC. I hit the NBC site today trying to find out why they aren't showing Law & Order: Criminal Intent anymore. I figured since they're showing L&O: SVU twice during the week that it must've been canceled. Nope, they're showing it "exclusively" on USA now. Why? How freaking stupid. They don't show any of the L&O shows on their site. Since Marcus and I downgraded our satellite to basic and since NBC/Universal (including the USA Network) is no longer putting content on iTunes, I don't have the ability to see it. I also can't get new Psych or Monk episodes once their contract with Apple expires. We can't complete the library of The Office episodes we were buying. We can't torrent everything because Comcast is cracking down on that. This is so lame.

One more reason why this country needs ala carte cable and satellite programming. I'm willing to pay for USA, Comedy Central, perhaps The Discovery Channel. I DON'T WANT Spanish-speaking stations, shopping channels, religious programming or the rest of the crap that gets bundled into the available packages. I would have gotten TBS, too, so that I could've watched the Rockies sweep the Diamondbacks these last four games instead of listening on the radio and watching the Gameday window on MLB.com. Does TBS have the exclusive contract for the World Series, too?

On a related note, I'm getting sick of network television in general. The only four shows so far this season that I'm digging is Ugly Betty, The Ghost Whisperer, The Big Bang Theory and The Office. Of course, an NBC boycott will drop The Office from my schedule. They're ruining the Vegas CSI and CSI: Miami by putting too much relationship crap into the story lines. Two and a Half Men is just pathetic. The dysfunction was funny for a couple of seasons — now it is just tired and sad. The same can be said for How I Met Your Mother. Caveman just sucked. I can do without Heroes this season, too. I did kind of enjoy that show Pushing Daisies last week, but I'm not sure if I could stomach that style every week, though.

The good news is that our PVR doesn't fill up very fast anymore. I'm certainly spending a lot less time camped out in front of the television.

Returning 24

I just noticed this morning that I've had the first disc of season 3 of 24 that I rented from Netflix in my possession since November 1st of 2006. I'd say chances are pretty good that after 10½ months, despite several attempts to do so, I'm never going to watch it. It's going back today.

Britney’s Comback Disaster

I usually avoid MTV and current pop music nonsense, but after seeing so much buzz about this on blogs and message boards, I had to view it for myself.

Wow.

Once upon a time, Britney Spears had it. Marcus was obsessed with her. In fact, he once told me that if he should ever have the chance to be with her, I'd be history. Well, fortunately for me, her total downspiral as of late has made that possibility null. The mere fact she popped out kids turned him off. Couple that with the addictions, the white trash behavior and the irresponsible attitude, is it any wonder she no longer holds appeal for a lot of men?

Anyway, not one to usually kick people when they're down, I was really hoping she'd clean up her act in rehab. If not for her, then at least for the poor children she brought into this world. After that humiliating display on the MTV VMA show the other night, I see that hasn't happened. You'd think if you were going for a comeback, you'd try to sober up. The girl looked drunk, high or both. Clumsily stumbling around on stage lip-syncing poorly to her own music with absolutely no passion whatsoever. Her backup dancers were more into it than she was. People have been knocking on her weight. While I don't think she's fat by any stretch, she definitely had no business on stage in a skimpy bikini.

I was amused by the horror-struck and disbelieving faces in the audience, especially those of her peers and fellow singers. It was most definitely a train wreck of epic proportions. If you haven't seen it for yourself, I'm sure the opening video of Britney over at the MTV VMA page will be available for a bit. If not, there's a low quality YouTube video in the extended.

Owen Wilson Suicide Attempt

I haven't been very current events savvy lately. I only just read that Owen Wilson may have attempted suicide last week. How tragically sad. I hope he gets help. I love him as an actor.

Veronia Mars Cancelled

Well, I found out today that I'm going to waste one less hour watching television. It turns out that CW's Veronica Mars was not renewed for this fall. That really ticks me off. I wish networks would let a series know before the end if it is going to be picked up again or not so that a series finale can be written if need be. I'm tired of being left hanging.
