Got Alpaca?

I've long wanted to own alpacas — it's been a dream of mine for ages. I've heard about the wonderful yarn you can make from their hair. Since I have neither the funds nor the space available for one, I've found the next best thing. A site online at www.alpacadirect.com not only sells luxurious alpaca yarn, but they also stock alpaca fiber apparel and gifts. You can even purchase gift cards for that knitter or crocheter in your life!

I found onne bit of information on the site that I didn't know about alpaca fibers. They're hypoallergenic. You don't have any idea how exciting I find that! I've yet to really try to knit or crochet myself any garments because i'm horribly allergic to sheep wool. Sweaters and the like made out of acrylic yarn just feel yucky against your skin. How wonderful it will be to finally be able to make myself something that I can comfortably wear without itchy skin or watery eyes. Alpaca yarn is stronger and less resistant to pilling that can occur with other fibers such as goat cashmere. That means it will last. Definitely a plus after all the time and energy spent making something.

So, I'm definitely going to get some alpaca yarn and give it a try. Now comes the hard part — deciding what color and weight of yarn I'd like to try first.

I Need These Knitting DVDs

In my quest to learn to knit, I've found American Knitter Learn to Knit DVD Lessons. It's a 3 DVD set. Each lesson is about 45 minutes. The price per disc is way better than the class prices I've found at local yarn shops.

I've tried to follow the instructions that were in the kit that Marcus' mother sent me last Christmas, but I'm a visual learner type of gal. I watched the demo lesson on the American Knitter site featuring a knitter named Tracie Wunderlich. She explaiins the process very well. Between watching that video and the lesson from Colleen at Laura's party last Friday, I've already got the knit and purl stitches down. Whoo Hoo! I'll be making my Harry Potter scarf in no time!
