Ugh, What a Day

Today sucked.

I'm not going to rehash all the crap that happened today. I'm pretty sure from my understanding of the law of attraction that I went into this week expecting the worst and I've manifested it.

I will say that I have either caught the cold going around work or I am having a bad reaction to the mosquito bites I got yesterday playing with the new powerwasher outside. I totally forgot the bug spray first.

Also, my right wrist and forearm are killing me. I can barely mouse, which stinks because I want to work on my template design and get my graphic design site up so I can hopefully get some more clients and make the money I need to get to Vegas. Checking my email when I got home from work almost brought me to tears.

I just got up from a 3 hour nap (thankfully Marcus came home), so I hope that doesn't hinder my ability to sleep this evening.

I've got a dull pain pounding in my temple, so I'm going to go take some ibuprofin and scrounge a bit of leftover meatloaf for dinner. Remember when meatloaf used to be the cheap meal make? Yeah, with beef at $2.50/lb, I guess those days are over.

I Wish It Was Friday Already

I try not to complain about work much anymore because compared to other jobs, there's really not a whole lot to complain about. Unfortunately, there is one big problem. I hate it when my supervisor goes on vacation. The person who covers for him is the Friday – Sunday supervisor and when she's there on Monday, it feels like Friday and that makes for one hell of a long week.

New Powerwasher

Ok, I said the other day we needed a powerwasher and today Marcus bought one! I cleaned the wheel wells on my car, washed crap off the outside of the house and since it was an electric model I even brought it inside to tackle the soap scum in our shower. w00t! That thing is cool!

Wise Advice for Designers

When I was in design school, the woman that taught our prepress classes was amazing (she owns Phases Design Studio)! A lot of designers really don't get the technical side of things and their eyes kind of glazed over when she talked. She also held people to strict, high standards and that put a lot of people off. After I got over the initial fear of her because of rumors of how mean and unfair she was, she quickly became one of my favorite teachers ever. She has such a wealth of knowledge about how computers worked, prepress issues, design sense, font problems, etc. I used to love picking her brain.

I remember a piece of advice she gave in class one day and it echoed through my mind yesterday as I was dealing with yet another set of problems caused by designers that do not really understand the tools they use. "If you want to be a really good graphic designer, one of your first jobs out of design school should be in a prepress department." I received a similar piece of advice from Joelle over at Moxie Design Studios awhile back regarding being a web designer. She suggested that if a person really wanted to be a great web designer, they should start out in a web production company. Wise women both.

I guess my whole point here is that if you're going to truly master a craft, start out somewhere where there are lots people who have been doing it a lot longer than you and be open to picking up as many tips and pointers as possible. I know my thirst to understand how and why things work and my ability to ask the right questions is gaining me knowledge that, while making me a better prepress employee, ultimately makes me a better designer. It's kind of sad that we don't really have true apprenticeships anymore.

In the Ghetto

The day before yesterday was the 30th anniversary of the death of Elvis Presley. His daughter, Lisa Marie Presley, made a video duet with her deceased father (ala Natalie/Nat King Cole) to the tune "In the Ghetto." It was done very well. I may have to get this song...it and the video are available on iTunes.
